Auburn Road House
Auburn Road House is a modest, thoughtful intervention to an existing grand Edwardian home in Hawthorn, Victoria.
The existing dwelling was insular, disconnected and failed to respond to the surrounding views and established landscaping on the site. The response was a series of small interventions to improve the livability and functionality of the home whilst retaining the existing classic Edwardian detailing of the house.
A large west facing window provides views from the lounge, dining and kitchen spaces to the pool and surrounding landscaping. A daybed against the window creates a cosy nook to enjoy the afternoon sun and has incidentally become the primary sitting area when entertaining guests.
Large sliding doors to the east create a seamless transition between the main living spaces and the primary outdoor entertaining area of the home.
A second west facing window from the living space frames an existing, well established crepe myrtle tree which flowers in the spring. The tree also acts a passive shading device for the window from the hot west sun.
The master bedroom suite was reconfigured to provide a more functional space the accommodated a generous walk in robe, make up station and ensuite bathroom. Natural stone and walnut timber combine to provide a timeless palette that is both warm and sophisticated.
Although small in scope, the interventions made at Auburn Road House have transformed the existing dwelling into a functional and elegant family home.
